transubstantial devotion, 2022
The motif ‘transubstantial devotion’ was birthed when I came to the realization that the way in which my maternal grandmother and I see God is intrinsically different yet at its core the same. Ever since I can remember, Catholicism has played a large part in my identity. My grandma would hum gospel songs as she bathed me; I would follow my mother to church as she swept and cleaned as a devotion to God; I attended catechism (Sunday school) weekly learning to recite the lord’s prayers until it became second nature to me. These experiences shaped my view of the world, cementing my moral compass. However, at the age of eleven I began to question the dogmas of the Catholic Church. This project is a homage to my Grandma and I’s devotional practice, although our methods of experiencing God is different, there are several overlays which I celebrate in this project.
